Distance depends on the band here
Platanos College admits by banding: applicants are placed into bands and each band is filled separately, so there is no single last-offer distance. Each band has its own, and which one applies depends on your child's assessment — so one number could not answer this for every child.
How the bands work: Five ability bands (encompassing a proportionate spread of different abilities) determined by Cognitive Ability Test (CAT) results; the school admits equal numbers of applicants into each band for Year 7 entry. All applicants sit the CAT once, in the autumn term after the admissions deadline; the mark is not considered further once the band is assigned. A separate Art/Music aptitude band exists in addition for children successful in a scholarship application. The oversubscription criteria are applied within each ability band. If a band is undersubscribed, remaining places go to (1) children in the band immediately above or below, then (2) any other children of other bands, then (3) children without a place who did not sit the banding test.
Your local authority’s admissions booklet publishes the cut-off for each band. The full ranked criteria are on the Admissions tab.
How places were offered at Platanos College, year by year →
When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.
If two applications tie: After applying the above criteria, random allocation within each ability band will be used for the remaining applicants and available places. This process will be supervised by someone independent of the school.
Document heading: 'For Admissions to Year 7 in September 2027'. PAN 160 includes pupils admitted through the banding process and under the Art or Music selection process. Up to 10% of the admission number (up to 16 places) is designated as a priority for applicants who show aptitude and potential in Art or Music, assessed by interview/audition panel with an independent assessor; unsuccessful Art/Music applicants are assigned to an ability band. Unfilled Art/Music places become available to all other applicants at the end of the allocation procedure. Scholarships in English, Maths, Science, Drama, PE, Sports and Community Contribution are awarded after a place has been offered and accepted and are NOT used in admissions selection. Where applications are received from twins or same-year siblings, if one child is selected for a scholarship place or by another admission criterion, the other sibling will be admitted into the respective band. A Supplementary Information Form must be returned directly to the school. Waiting list ranked by the oversubscription criteria within bands, kept open until the end of the Autumn Term of that admissions round.
Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
