How many A-levels should my child take?

Most universities require 3 A-levels. Taking 4 is common in Year 12 but dropping one in Year 13 is standard practice. Only Oxbridge, medicine, and a few competitive courses genuinely benefit from 4 A-levels. Taking 3 strong grades is better than 4 weaker ones. Some students take AS-levels in a 4th subject instead.

Are BTECs accepted by universities?

Yes. Most universities accept BTECs, and they carry UCAS tariff points. A BTEC Extended Diploma at D*D*D* = 168 UCAS points (equivalent to A*A*A* at A-level). However, some Russell Group courses prefer A-levels for certain subjects, particularly sciences. Always check the specific course requirements.

What are T-levels and are they worth it?

T-levels are the newest post-16 qualification, launched from 2020. They are equivalent to 3 A-levels and include a 45-day industry placement. They are well-regarded by employers and increasingly accepted by universities. The main risk is that they are still new — some universities haven’t fully updated their entry requirements yet.

Can my child mix A-levels and BTECs?

Yes. Many students take 2 A-levels + 1 BTEC, or 1 A-level + a BTEC Diploma. This gives a mix of academic and vocational study. Check that the combination is accepted by their target universities and that the timetable works at their chosen school or college.

Is my child required to stay in education after 16?

In England, yes. The "participation age" was raised to 18 in 2015. Young people must be in education, training, or an apprenticeship until age 18. This does not mean they must stay in school — apprenticeships and part-time training count. In Scotland, Wales, and NI, the compulsory leaving age is 16.

My child didn’t get grade 4 in English or maths GCSE. What happens?

They must continue studying English and/or maths and resit the GCSE alongside their post-16 programme. This is a legal requirement in England ("condition of funding"). Schools and colleges will provide the teaching. The resit is in November or the following June.

What is the difference between a Level 3 apprenticeship and A-levels?

Both are Level 3 qualifications (equivalent level). A-levels are academic and exam-based. Apprenticeships are practical and workplace-based. The key differences: apprentices earn a salary (minimum £7.55/hour (from April 2025), often more), gain work experience, and often have a job at the end. A-level students get broader academic knowledge and easier access to university.

Should my child consider a gap year?

A well-planned gap year can be valuable: work experience, travel, volunteering, or saving money. Universities generally welcome deferred entry (apply through UCAS and defer). The risks: loss of academic momentum, cost, and the social experience of starting university with your cohort. Avoid an unplanned gap year with no structure.

How do degree apprenticeships work?

Degree apprenticeships combine a full degree with practical work experience. The employer pays the tuition fees. You earn a salary while studying (typically £15–25k/year). Duration: 3–5 years. You graduate with a degree AND work experience AND no student debt. Competition is intense — some have lower acceptance rates than Oxbridge.

What if my child wants to change direction after starting post-16?

Changing in the first few weeks is usually possible — talk to the school/college immediately. After October half-term, switching becomes harder (you’ve missed too much content). Some students switch from A-levels to BTECs or vice versa. Switching institutions mid-year is possible but disruptive. If your child is unhappy, act quickly.

Best for

Students who prefer coursework over exams, want hands-on learning, and may not thrive in purely academic study. Can be combined with A-levels.

Apprenticeships

Scottish Highers & Advanced Highers

1 year each (Highers in S5, Advanced Highers in S6)

Scotland’s equivalent to A-levels. Highers are 1-year courses (S5), Advanced Highers are 1-year courses (S6). More breadth than A-levels.

Assessment: Exams at end of year. Coursework component in some subjects.

Entry: National 5 passes at A–C in relevant subjects for Highers.

Best for
