UK independent schools have their own dense vocabulary and association acronyms (HMC, GSA, IAPS, ISC, BSA, ISI, COBIS, ISEB, AGBIS…) that aren't explained anywhere else. This is the orientation guide: terminology you need before reading anything else, what the associations signal, and a curated map of where to go next for fees, admissions, boarding, scholarships and the post-2025 VAT change. Each topic has its own deep-dive guide — this page just gets you started.
Key facts
UK independent-sector vocabulary is dense and historically loaded. Get this clear before reading school websites or talking to admissions teams.
If you're from the US and see “public school” on a UK school website, it almost certainly means an elite fee-paying boarding school, not a free state school. Use “state school” for free schools and “independent” or “private” for fee-paying.
Most independent-school websites prominently list membership of one or more associations. These signal shared standards and (for some) academic profile — but membership isn't a quality guarantee. Always cross-reference with the latest ISI / Ofsted inspection report.
ISC — Independent Schools Council
The umbrella body coordinating HMC, GSA, IAPS, ISA, AGBIS, BSA and others. Publishes the annual ISC Census on the sector. Around 1,400 ISC-member schools educating ~570,000 pupils.
HMC — Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference
Around 350 leading senior schools (mostly secondary, often boarding). Membership signals strong academic profile — historically the most selective and prestigious independents.
GSA — Girls' Schools Association
Around 220 senior girls' independent schools. Many are HMC-affiliated too.
IAPS — Independent Association of Prep Schools
Around 600 prep schools (ages 4–13). Members commit to common standards on prep-phase provision.
ISA — Independent Schools Association
Around 580 independents across all phases — broader membership including smaller schools, specialists, and faith schools.
BSA — Boarding Schools Association
Around 600 boarding schools. Sets standards for boarding pastoral care and accommodation.
COBIS — Council of British International Schools
British-curriculum schools overseas. Relevant if you're moving to the UK from a COBIS-accredited international school — UK schools recognise COBIS-school records well.
AGBIS — Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools
Governance-focused association for the boards of independent schools. Less visible to parents but signals the school takes governance training seriously.
