Independent Schools in Northern Ireland: The Grammar School Anomaly
One mainstream fee-paying school. 65+ free grammars. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK where selective education is free, universal, and renders the private sector almost entirely redundant. Here’s why NI is different — and what families actually need to know.
Key facts
- Rockport is the only mainstream fee-paying day/boarding school — 15 registered independents in total, but 65+ free grammar schools make the private sector redundant.
- Around 45% of post-primary pupils attend grammar schools — vastly higher than any other UK nation.
- A single common transfer test (SEAG) is sat at age 11 — two papers on two Saturdays in November, administered by GL Assessment.
- Grammar schools are free, academically selective, and often linked to Catholic or Protestant communities.
- A-level results at NI grammar schools are consistently among the best in the UK — without any fees.
Why Northern Ireland Has Almost No Private Schools
The Transfer Test: NI’s 11+ System
The transfer test is how Northern Ireland sorts children into grammar and non-grammar schools at age 11. Since November 2023, a single common test is run by SEAG.
A single unified test since 2023
Since November 2023, SEAG runs a single common transfer test replacing the former AQE and GL/PPTC systems. Two papers are sat on two Saturdays in November, administered by GL Assessment. This simplifies the process — families no longer need to sit multiple tests.
