Distance depends on the band here
The Grey Coat Hospital admits by banding: applicants are placed into bands and each band is filled separately, so there is no single last-offer distance. Each band has its own, and which one applies depends on your child's assessment — so one number could not answer this for every child.
How the bands work: All girls (except language-aptitude applicants who also attend the banding test) sit a non-verbal reasoning test on assessment day and are placed into three ability bands: Band 1 (top 25%), Band 2 (middle 50%), Band 3 (bottom 25%). Remaining 160 places (after language places) are allocated across bands with places split between Church of England, Other church and Open categories as shown in the published table (Band1: 25 CofE/9 other/6 open=40; Band2: 52/18/10=80; Band3: 25/9/6=40; Total:102/36/22=160).
Your local authority’s admissions booklet publishes the cut-off for each band. The full ranked criteria are on the Admissions tab.
When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.
If two applications tie: Where the order of priority is otherwise equal, preference will be given to a child who lives the shortest distance measured as a straight-line from the school. Where applicants live the same distance, priority will be decided by random allocation.
Criteria applied after allocation of children with an Education, Health, and Care (EHC) Plan. Where a band is undersubscribed, remaining places in that band are allocated using the same order of priority and tie-breaker as for open places, without reference to band. Where there is undersubscription for open places, extra places are treated first as Church of England places and second as other church places.
Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
