When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1Looked After Children and previously Looked After Children — Looked After Children and previously Looked After Children (see note (a) below for the full definition).
2. 2Catchment area with sibling in Years 8-11 — Children who, on 31st October 2026, live in the catchment area of the school as defined by the Admission Authority and it is expected will have an older brother or sister on the roll of this school in Years 8-11 at the start of the academic year 2027 (see notes (b), (c) and (d) below)
3. 3Catchment area — Children who, on 31st October 2026, live in the catchment area of this school as defined by the Admission Authority (see note (b) below)
4. 4Sibling on roll Years 8-11 — Children who, on 31st October 2026, it is expected will have an older sibling on the roll of this school in Years 8-11 at the start of the academic year 2027 (see notes (c) and (d) below)
5. 5Feeder schools — Children who, on 31st October 2026, are on the roll of one of our associated primary/junior/junior and infant catchment area schools (feeder schools) as identified by the Admissions Authority. (see note (f) below)
6. 6Children of staff — Children of staff employed by Sir Thomas Wharton Academy, where the member of staff meets the two criteria below: a. Is employed on a permanent Sir Thomas Wharton Academy contract on 31st October 2026. b. Has been employed in that permanent role for two or more years as of 31st October 2026. This priority applies to all permanent school based staff (teaching, leadership and associate professional staff) employed at Sir Thomas Wharton Academy. (see note (g) below)
7. 7Distance — Children who, on 31st October 2026, live nearest to the school measured by a straight line on a horizontal plane, (commonly known as a measurement 'as the crow flies').

If two applications tie: In the event of two distances being equal, lots will be drawn by a representative independent of the admission authority.

Where the published admission number for the school is likely to be reached mid category, places will be prioritised within that category by reference to distance. Applications for children with SEN but no EHCP are considered on the basis of the published admissions criteria; children with an EHCP naming the school are admitted first by law (not numbered as part of the ordered list).
