Distance depends on the band here
Walsall Academy admits by banding: applicants are placed into bands and each band is filled separately, so there is no single last-offer distance. Each band has its own, and which one applies depends on your child's assessment — so one number could not answer this for every child.
How the bands work: Applicants will be placed in one of nine ability bands based upon their score in the NFER (National Foundation of Education Research) Non-Verbal Reasoning Test. Band distribution: Band 1=4%, Band 2=7%, Band 3=12%, Band 4=17%, Band 5=20%, Band 6=17%, Band 7=12%, Band 8=7%, Band 9=4%. If 208 places allocated: 8, 15, 25, 35, 42, 35, 25, 15, 8 respectively. All children who apply will be invited to attend the assessment. Children cannot 'fail' the NFER assessment. If an applicant fails to sit the admissions assessment, their application will be deemed to be withdrawn. Where there are insufficient children in a particular band, the next nearest child will be selected from the band below, then the band above.
Your local authority’s admissions booklet publishes the cut-off for each band. The full ranked criteria are on the Admissions tab.
How places were offered at Walsall Academy, year by year →
When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.
If two applications tie: Where two applications cannot otherwise be separated, the place will be offered on the basis of random allocation.
The published PAN is 168; for September 2027 an additional 40 places have been agreed by the Local Governing Board providing a total of 208. These additional places will be reviewed each year and should not infer that the number of places will be 208 in the future.
Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
