West Monmouth Comprehensive School

When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1Looked after and previously looked after children — Priority 1: Children who are looked after (CLA) by the Authority or have been previously looked after.
2. 2Medical grounds supported by a consultant's report — Priority 2: Children on medical grounds which are supported by a medical consultant's/specialist's report, obtained by the parents, specifying the medical advantage of the child attending the preferred school compared with the normal catchment school. NB: Reports from family doctors are not accepted for this purpose.
3. 3In catchment with a relevant sibling — Priority 3: Children residing in the catchment area of their preferred school with relevant siblings at the school at the date of admission.
4. 4In catchment without a sibling — Priority 4: Children residing in the catchment area of their preferred school without any siblings at the school at the date of admission.
5. 5Outside catchment with a relevant sibling — Priority 5: Children residing outside of the catchment area of their preferred school with relevant siblings at the school at the date of admission.
6. 6Outside catchment without a sibling — Priority 6: Children residing out of catchment area of their chosen school without any siblings at the school at the date of admission.

If two applications tie: After taking account of the above categories, priority will be based on closeness to the school. Distance measurements are calculated using Geographic Information System (GIS) software. The distance is measured from the point where the child's home meets the highway, to the nearest available school entrance using Ordnance Survey road and footpath network data. Where more than one sibling case must be separated, priority is assessed based on those children CLOSEST IN AGE to the elder brothers or sisters already at the school at the date of admission.

IN TORFAEN EVERY ADDRESS FALLS WITHIN THE CATCHMENT AREA OF BOTH AN ENGLISH-MEDIUM AND A WELSH-MEDIUM SCHOOL — so a family has two catchment schools, one in each language, and residing in the catchment of the preferred school still does not guarantee a place. A medical case must be supported by a consultant's or specialist's report obtained by the parents and must specify the medical ADVANTAGE of the preferred school over the normal catchment school; reports from family doctors are NOT accepted. Brothers and sisters — full, half, step or foster — count where living together at the same address, and only where the older child will definitely be registered at the school when the younger is eligible; siblings born in the same academic year also receive sibling priority. The sibling criterion applies in Reception to Year 11 only, and siblings receive NO priority for nursery places. Where a school is named in a Local Authority Individual Development Plan the Council must admit the child BEFORE the oversubscription criteria are applied.
