When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1Children in care / previously in care — Children in care and children who ceased to be in care because they were adopted (or became subject to a child arrangements order or special guardianship order), including those children who appear to have been in state care outside of England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted.
2. 2Exceptional medical or other circumstances plus hardship — Children whose current exceptional circumstances satisfy both: Test 1 - the child is distinguished from the great majority of other applicants either on their own medical grounds requiring regular and sustained medical treatment, or by other extreme exceptional circumstances (supported by a medical report, or a recent professional's report, obtained by the applicant); Test 2 - the child will suffer hardship (severe suffering, not merely difficulty, inconvenience, or mild to moderate emotional distress) if unable to attend the preferred school.
3. 3Elder sibling at the Academy — Children who have an elder sibling in attendance at the Academy and who will still be attending the school at the proposed admission date, living at the same home address for the majority of the school week and related as defined (natural, married parents, adopted/fostered by a common parent, or unrelated children of partners living together).
4. 4Living within the catchment area — Children living within the catchment area.
5. 5Nearest by distance — Other children arranged in order of priority according to how near their home addresses are to the main gate of the school, determined by a straight-line measurement as calculated by the local authority's geographical information system.

If two applications tie: If Staffordshire County Council cannot distinguish between applicants using the criteria listed (e.g. children who live in the same block of flats), the child or children offered the available spaces will be randomly selected; this process will be independently verified.

Children with an EHCP naming the school are admitted before other places are allocated (stated trust-wide, not itself a numbered oversubscription criterion). Where catchment-area applicants cannot all be accommodated, the policy text refers to allocating 'the remaining criteria i.e. fifth and sixth priority' even though only five priorities are printed for this school (a leftover from the shared template also used for Cheslyn Hay/Great Wyrley, which do have a sixth priority); no sixth criterion is actually published for Sir Thomas Boughey Academy. No separate Year 12/Sixth Form admission arrangements are published for this school in the document (unlike Windsor High School and the joint Cheslyn Hay/Great Wyrley 'Aspire' Sixth Form).
