Monkton Wood Academy

When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1Looked after and previously looked after children — A 'looked after child' is one who is (a) in the care of a Local Authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a Local Authority in the exercise of their social services functions, in England. A 'previously looked after child' is one who was looked after in England but ceased to be so because they were adopted, or became subject to a Child Arrangements Order or Special Guardianship Order, as well as a child who appears to have been in state care outside of England but ceased to be so as a result of being adopted.
2. 2In designated area of first priority, with a sibling in Year 7-10 — Children living within the Academy's designated area of first priority with a sibling at the Academy in Year 7 to Year 10 at the time of application.
3. 3In the designated area of priority — Children living within the Academy's designated area of priority.
4. 4Sibling in Year 7-10, outside the designated area — Children with a sibling at the Academy in Year 7 to Year 10, where the child's home address is not located within the designated area of priority.
5. 5All other children — All applicant children not included in any of the criteria above.

If two applications tie: Priority is determined by distance between the child's home address and the Academy (straight line, Somerset Council computerised mapping, designated address points), with those living closer having higher priority. Where distance is equal (e.g. same block of flats), a random lottery is used, overseen by a person independent of the Academy. Where twins/triplets/higher multiple-birth siblings apply together to the same year group and not all can be allocated a place because of the tie-breaker for the final place(s), all of them will be allocated a place regardless of pupil numbers.

The Academy explicitly states it 'does not have any feeder schools' (7.2). The Academy's sixth form ('the Space') is covered by a separate policy not included in this document; this policy applies only to Years 7-11, so no Year 12 entry is given here. Children with an EHCP naming the Academy are admitted under a separate statutory process, not this policy: in the normal admission round their place is allocated before others within the PAN (reducing what remains); at any other time they are admitted regardless of numbers (not itself a numbered oversubscription criterion). Notable definitional inconsistency in the source: for the in-catchment sibling criterion (rank 2), a cousin, grandchild or friend's child living at the same address IS explicitly counted as a 'sibling'; for the out-of-catchment sibling criterion (rank 4), the same relationships are explicitly stated NOT to count as a 'sibling' even if co-resident - both reproduced exactly as printed, not reconciled.
