Distance depends on the band here
The Canterbury Academy admits by banding: applicants are placed into bands and each band is filled separately, so there is no single last-offer distance. Each band has its own, and which one applies depends on your child's assessment — so one number could not answer this for every child.
How the bands work: A normal distribution across 9 bands is used to ensure a comprehensive intake. Band percentages: Band 1=4%, Band 2=7%, Band 3=12%, Band 4=17%, Band 5=20%, Band 6=17%, Band 7=12%, Band 8=7%, Band 9=4%. Students who sit the banding assessment are considered for available places before those who have not taken it. Where students have not taken the banding assessment, they will be ranked according to the oversubscription criteria and allocated a place only in the event that there are available spaces after students who did take it have been considered.
Your local authority’s admissions booklet publishes the cut-off for each band. The full ranked criteria are on the Admissions tab.
When there are more applications than places for 2025-26 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.
If two applications tie: Distance (straight-line, NLPG). In the event that more than one applicant lives the same distance from home to the academy, a random selection will be applied.
31 places reserved for selective music students (allocated independently of banding via audition). Additional places: 6 for Speech and Language Unit, 4 for Cullum Centre ASD provision, 2 for Hearing Impairment provision. Year 6 students successful in the Kent or other formal selective test get priority consideration for entry into the Simon Langton Grammar School band. Children with a statement of special educational need naming the school are admitted before oversubscription criteria are applied.
Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
