Bishop's Hatfield Girls' School

When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1CLA/PCLA — Children looked after (CLA) and children who were previously looked after (PCLA), including those who appear (to the admission authority) to have been in state care outside of England, and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted or became subject to a child arrangements order or a special guardianship order.
2. 2Medical or Social — Girls for whom it can be demonstrated that they have a particular medical or social need to go to the school. A panel of governors will determine whether the evidence provided is sufficiently compelling to meet the requirements for this rule. The evidence must relate specifically to the school applied for under Rule 2 and must clearly demonstrate why it is the ONLY school that can meet the child's needs. Supporting professional evidence/advice MUST be included, e.g. a letter from a doctor, for this application to be considered.
3. 3Sibling — Girls who have a sibling at the school at the time of application, unless the sibling is in the last year of the normal age-range of the school, ie in Year 13.
4. 4Children of Staff — Girls who have either a) a parent employed by the school as a member of staff on a permanent contract for a continuous period of two or more years at the date of application or b) a parent who has been recruited to a vacant post at the school for which there is a demonstrable skills shortage.
5. 5Aptitude in Modern Foreign Languages and Music — Up to 5% [7 places] will be allocated to girls living in the priority area admitted on the basis of aptitude in Modern Foreign Languages. Up to 5% [7 places] will be allocated to girls living in the priority area admitted on the basis of aptitude in Music. These allocations will be determined by the school through an assessment of aptitude for MFL or Music based on assessments carried out by the school. Priority will be given to those with the highest score in these tests. In the event of a tie-break being required under this criterion, places will be allocated to the pupil living closest to the school using home-school distance using the home-school measurement system used by Hertfordshire County Council as outlined in the County's admission arrangements and application literature.
6. 6Girls who live in the priority area — Places remaining after allocations made under rules 1-5 will be allocated to each parish/unparished area or town in accordance with the percentages outlined below (Codicote 3, Hatfield 38, Knebworth 2, North Mymms 6, Potters Bar 9, Welwyn 7, Welwyn Garden City 34, Woolmer Green 1). In the event of there being more applications than places available to a particular parish/unparished area or town, places will be allocated as follows: a) Those for whom it is their nearest Hertfordshire maintained school or academy that is non-faith and non-partially selective and makes provision for children of the relevant gender (if more children qualify under rule 6 than places, the tiebreak would be those that live closest to the school); b) Any remaining places available to a parish/unparished area or town for whom it is not their nearest school. Places will be allocated on a random basis. If a named parish does not use its full allocation, any surplus places will be allocated under this criterion on a random basis to a child/children from other parishes in the priority area.
7. 7Girls who live outside of the priority area — Girls who live outside the priority area on the basis of distance, with those living nearest to the School given priority.

If two applications tie: For Rule 6b and surplus places: random allocation administered by HCC (individual random number assigned between 1 and 1 million, lowest number given priority). For Rule 7: straight-line home-to-school distance, closest given priority.

Rule 5 is a partial aptitude criterion (up to 10% of PAN: 7 places MFL + 7 places Music), restricted to girls living in the priority area. The priority area comprises: Hatfield, North Mymms, Welwyn, Welwyn Garden City, Woolmer Green, Potters Bar, Knebworth, Codicote. Sixth Form external PAN is 30. Twins/multiple births: if one sibling is offered a place, all other multiple birth siblings will also be offered a place even if above PAN.
