How are Reception places decided at Applegarth Academy?

When Applegarth Academy has more applications than places for 2027-28, they are offered in a published order of priority: 1. Looked After and Previously Looked After Children — A child in public care at the date the application is made, or who was in public care but ceased to be so because they were adopted or became subject to a Child Arrangements Order or Special Guardianship Order immediately after being in public care, as well as children who appear to have been in state care outside England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted. Must be supported by the relevant Local Authority's Children's Services Department; failure to provide evidence results in the child being placed in the next category that applies; 2. Children with a Medical Need to Attend Applegarth Academy Only — Children for whom Applegarth Academy is the only suitable and appropriate school. The GP or hospital consultant must expressly confirm the nature of the medical condition of the child or parent and why only Applegarth Academy is suitable and appropriate. Social reasons and inconvenience for parents are not compelling reasons. The STEP Executive Team decides. Ranked within the category by proximity of home address, nearer receiving higher priority; 3. Children with a Sibling at Applegarth Academy at the Date of Admission — A sibling includes a full, half, step, adopted or foster brother or sister, and a child of their parent's partner with whom they have been cohabiting for at least one year at the application deadline, provided the sibling and applicant live at the child's home address and are brought up as siblings as part of a core family unit. Cousins/friends' children at the same address are not siblings. Ranked within the category by proximity, and 3 further criteria. The school offers 60 places at this entry point. Tie-break: Where two applications cannot otherwise be separated because the distance from home address to the Academy is the same, the order in which places are allocated is determined by random lottery in the presence of a person independent of the Academy. Distance is measured in a straight line from the geographical reference point at the child's main home address to the Academy's designated entrance using the Local Authority's geographical distance measuring software.
