When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Reception), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.
If two applications tie: If the governing body are unable to admit all applicants who fall into the lowest criterion a tie-breaker will be applied. The governing body will give priority to children living nearest the school as measured by the safest walking route (primary school) and will ask the Local Authority to calculate this. The Local Authority use the GPS system to calculate home school distances in miles.
Children who will have siblings on roll at St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School in the year the applicant would join the school will have priority under each oversubscription criteria. Proof of baptism will be required for categories 1-3 and 5-6, in line with The Archdiocese ‘Eastern Catholic Churches– Guidance for Schools’ document. The child’s birth certificate is also required. Multiple births: If the last child to be admitted is one of multiple birth, the Governors will admit the other sibling(s). Late applications or incomplete applications will only be processed after places have been allocated for applications received by the closing date. Waiting lists are held until 31st August of the application year; position may change based on priority, not time on the list. In-year applicants moving into Cardiff are not automatically allocated a place at the local school; refusals can be appealed. Parents have the right of appeal against refusal decisions and must contact the school for details of the appeal process and an appeal form.
Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
