Scottish education is structured around the Curriculum for Excellence from age 3 to 18, with Broad General Education up to S3 and a Senior Phase where pupils work towards National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications awarded by the SQA. Most state schools are non-denominational or Roman Catholic, state-funded Gaelic-medium provision is available in several councils, and Scottish independent schools (including Edinburgh's day schools and a strong boarding sector) sit outside the state sector with their own entrance exams.
