When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Reception), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.
If two applications tie: If there are not enough places for all the children in one of these priority groups, the council will give priority first to those with a sibling at the school in September 2027, who live the nearest to the school (in all cases sibling refers to brother or sister, half brother or sister, adopted brother or sister, step brother or sister, or the child of the parent/carer’s partner who live permanently at the same address where the child for whom the school place is sought is living in the same family unit) and then to those living nearest the school. All distance measurements are based on the nearest route which is recognised by North Yorkshire Council’s electronic mapping system from a child’s home address to school. The measurement is made from a fixed point within the dwelling, as identified by ordnance survey, to the nearest school entrance identified on the system using footpaths and roads. The routes measured to determine the allocation of school places will be those recognised by the electronic mapping system used by the school admissions team. If the distance tie-break is not sufficient to distinguish between applicants in a particular priority group a random allocation will be used as set out in this document. North Yorkshire measures distance by the nearest ROUTE its electronic mapping system recognises — along footpaths and roads from a fixed point in the home to the nearest school entrance — not in a straight line, which is what most councils use.
North Yorkshire Council is the admission authority for all community and voluntary controlled primary, infant, junior and secondary schools in its area and sets these criteria for all of them. Every such school has a defined "normal area" — what most councils call a catchment area. Academies, voluntary aided and foundation schools set their own criteria.
Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
