Monmouth Comprehensive School

When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1Looked after and previously looked after children — Children Looked After (CLA) or Children previously Looked After, i.e. children that are in the care of or have previously been in the care of a local authority, will be afforded priority over those fulfilling points 2-9 below.
2. 2Exceptional medical circumstances — Children with exceptional medical circumstances will be afforded priority over those fulfilling points 3-9 below.
3. 3In catchment with a relevant sibling — Children residing within the catchment area for the preferred school who have relevant siblings will be afforded priority over those fulfilling points 4-9 below.
4. 4Out of catchment, sibling remained after being refused their catchment school — Children residing outside of the catchment area for the preferred school, but with relevant siblings who will continue to be in attendance at the preferred school due to being unsuccessful in their application for a place at their catchment school, will be afforded priority over those fulfilling points 5-9 below.
5. 5In catchment — Children residing inside the catchment area for the preferred school will be afforded priority over those fulfilling points 7-9 below.
6. 6Out of catchment with a relevant sibling not covered by criteria 4 and 5 — Children residing outside of the catchment area for the preferred school, with a relevant sibling (who will be in attendance at the preferred school at time of admission) that does not meet criteria points 4 and 5 above, will be afforded priority over those fulfilling points 8-9.
7. 7On roll at a designated feeder primary school — Children currently on roll at a primary school that is designated to be a feeder school for the preferred secondary school will be afforded priority over those fulfilling point 9.
8. 8Distance — After applying the categories above, or should the school continue to be in a position of over-subscription in any of the above categories, priority will be based on closeness to the preferred school, measured using the shortest safe walking route.

If two applications tie: Any over-subscription within any of the above criteria is finally determined on distance: places are allocated to those children whose home address is determined to be closer to the preferred school, measured using the shortest safe walking route.

The secondary list adds a FEEDER SCHOOL criterion at rank 7 which the primary list does not have — but note it sits BELOW every catchment and sibling criterion, so attending a designated feeder primary only helps against families with no other connection. NOTE ALSO CRITERION 4: a family living outside the catchment whose older child ended up at this school only because they were REFUSED a place at their own catchment school ranks ABOVE families living inside the catchment without a sibling.
