When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Reception), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1Children Looked After — ‘Children Looked After’ (children in public care) and previously ‘Children Looked After’.
2. 2In catchment with sibling — Children whose home is inside the school’s catchment area and have an older sibling attending the school from the same address, at the date of application, who will continue to attend that school in September 2027.
3. 3In catchment, no sibling — Children whose home is inside the school’s catchment area who do not have an older sibling attending the school.
4. 4Out of catchment with sibling — Children whose home is outside the school’s catchment area and have an older sibling attending from the same address, at the date of application, who will continue to attend that school in September 2027.
5. 5Out of catchment, no sibling — Children whose home is outside the school’s catchment area who do not have an older sibling attending the school. Children residing within MTCBC, will be given priority over out of county pupils.

If two applications tie: If, within any one of the priority categories listed, all the applicants cannot be offered a place, preference will be given to children living nearest to the school. Distance will be measured by the authority using the shortest safe walking route between the home address and the nearest open school gate (or shortest driving route where no safe walking route identified), using the authority's 'mapping schools' electronic system only.

Local-authority coordinated default oversubscription criteria for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council's community and voluntary-controlled schools (the council is the admission authority). Some community/voluntary-controlled schools in this authority apply catchment-area, feeder-school or priority-area variants — check the individual school for its exact arrangements. Document also contains a separate voluntary-aided school's (Blessed Carlo Acutis) own oversubscription criteria, which is excluded as it is not a community/VC school. The council notes each school has its own designated catchment area, and catchment area status is used within the shared ranking; this constitutes a school variant in the definition of 'in catchment' but the ordered priority categories themselves are the shared default for community/VC schools.
