Cheriton Primary School

When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Reception), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1Children in Local Authority Care or Previously in Local Authority Care — A looked after child is a child who is (a) in the care of a local authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (see the definition in Section 22(1) of the Children Act 1989) at the time of making an application to a school. A previously looked after child means such children who were adopted (or subject to child arrangements orders or special guardianship orders) immediately following having been looked after and those children who appear to the admission authority to have been in state care outside of England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted.
2. 2Children with a Current Family Association — A brother or sister attending Cheriton Primary School when the child starts or, after giving priority for such children, at the time at which application is made defined as a natural brothers and sisters, adopted brothers and sisters, step brothers and sisters, foster brothers and sisters. When we are able within the school's Published Admission Number (PAN) to offer a place to a child of multiple birth (twins, triplets etc) we will offer places to all the children of that birth even if doing so takes the school above its PAN.
3. 3Children of Service Personnel or Crown Servants and British Council employees with a confirmed posting to the Cheriton area — as an 'excepted pupil' we will offer places to a child from these families even if doing so takes the school above its PAN.
4. 4Children with Exceptional Compassionate, Social, Medical/Health or Special Access Needs — Priority will be given to children under this criterion, which applies equally to such needs of the child's parents or carers, where there is on any of these grounds a demonstrable and significant need to attend Cheriton Primary School. The application must be supported by written evidence from an appropriately qualified person who where there are health or impairment issues must be a qualified medical practitioner. The evidence must demonstrate strong reasons why Cheriton Primary School is the most suitable school and the difficulties that would be caused if the child had to attend another school.
5. 5Children of Staff at the School — Priority will be given to children of a member of staff who has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application is made and children of a member of staff who has been recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage.
6. 6Distance/Nearness of Children's Home to School — Remaining places will be offered to children according to how near their permanent residence is to the school, with those living closer to the school receiving a higher priority. Measured in a straight line using the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) address point.

If two applications tie: In the unlikely event that two or more children live at the same distance from the school and in all other ways have equal eligibility for the last available place at the school, then the names will be issued a number and drawn randomly to decide which child is given the place.

Children with a statement of SEN or EHCP naming the school are admitted before oversubscription criteria are applied, and the PAN is reduced accordingly; this is not numbered as part of the ordered criteria.

Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
