Distance depends on the band here
The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial RC School admits by banding: applicants are placed into bands and each band is filled separately, so there is no single last-offer distance. Each band has its own, and which one applies depends on your child's assessment — so one number could not answer this for every child.
How the bands work: Boys are admitted in three ability bands based on a banding test (Maths and English, not a pass/fail entry test): Band 1 (above average ability) 25% - 32 places; Band 2 (average ability) 50% - 64 places; Band 3 (below average ability) 25% - 32 places. Top 25% of test scores = Band 1, middle 50% = Band 2, bottom 25% = Band 3.
Your local authority’s admissions booklet publishes the cut-off for each band. The full ranked criteria are on the Admissions tab.
How places were offered at The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial RC School, year by year →
When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.
If two applications tie: If there are more boys in any group, A-F above, than places available, remaining places will be offered by random allocation, conducted independently by the local authority using an electronic random allocation system.
Boys with an EHCP naming the school are admitted first, before these oversubscription criteria are applied. Where a place is offered to a boy who has a male twin/triplet applying for a place in the same school year, the sibling(s) will also be offered a place.
Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
