How places are decided at St Mary Magdalene Academy

When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Reception), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1Looked after and previously looked after children — Looked after children and all previously looked after children, including those children who appear to have been in state care outside of England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted. Applications under this criterion should be accompanied by evidence to show that the child is looked-after or was previously looked-after (e.g. a copy of the adoption, child arrangements or special guardianship order)
2Children of UK service personnel and crown servants — For families of service personnel with a confirmed posting, or crown servants returning from overseas, the school will allocate a place in advance of the family arriving in the area (as long as one is available), and provided the application is accompanied by an official letter that declares a relocation date and so long as some evidence of their intended address is provided for a unit or quarter address to be used
3Siblings — Children having a sibling (or siblings) who will be attending the Primary Department of the Academy at the date of the applicant's admission.
4Children of teaching staff — Children of members of the teaching staff working at the Academy (please refer to criteria set out in 1.12.16 of this policy)
5Attendance at named partner churches — Children whose parents/carers regularly attend Hope Church Islington (St Mary Magdalene Church, Holloway Road) or St Luke's Church (Hillmarton Road, Holloway)
6Attendance at other Christian churches in Islington — Children whose parents/carers live in the Borough of Islington and regularly attend Christian Churches or Chapels other than those listed in criterion 1.11.5
7Proximity of home to school — Any remaining places available (i.e. 30 minus the places granted under criteria 1.11.1, 1.11.2, 1.11.3, 1.11.4, 1.11.5 & 1.11.6 above) will then be allocated on the basis of the proximity of parent's/carer's Permanent Residence to the Academy, with priority being given to those living closest.

If two applications tie: In the event of two or more applicants having the same distance a decision will be made by random allocation.

Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which names the Academy are allocated places prior to the application of the above criteria, as required by law, and are not part of the numbered oversubscription criteria. Proximity is measured as straight line distance from the Permanent Residence to the mid-point of the Academy grounds using a computerised mapping system.

Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
