School Atlas lists 398 state primary schools, 79 state secondary schools, 3 all-through schools, 26 special schools, 8 alternative provision schools and 4 post-16 schools and colleges in Hertfordshire. It also lists 57 independent schools and 536 nurseries and other early-years settings.
Of the state primary, secondary and all-through schools, 135 have a religious character: 86 Church of England, 42 Roman Catholic, 3 Jewish, 2 Church of England/Christian, 1 Christian and 1 Orthodox Jewish.
Of the 480 state primary, secondary and all-through schools in Hertfordshire, 299 hold an Ofsted overall-effectiveness grade from their last graded inspection: 48 Outstanding, 246 Good and 5 Requires improvement.
Ofsted stopped giving state schools a single overall grade in September 2024. Since November 2025 its report cards grade each area separately; 63 of these schools have had one.
Hertfordshire uses catchment areas but hasn't published a map we can draw.
