School Atlas lists 444 state primary schools, 79 state secondary schools, 2 all-through schools, 24 special schools, 6 alternative provision schools and 6 post-16 schools and colleges in Essex. It also lists 49 independent schools and 622 nurseries and other early-years settings.
Of the state primary, secondary and all-through schools, 153 have a religious character: 120 Church of England, 31 Roman Catholic, 1 Christian and 1 Church of England/Roman Catholic.
Of the 525 state primary, secondary and all-through schools in Essex, 337 hold an Ofsted overall-effectiveness grade from their last graded inspection: 23 Outstanding, 306 Good and 8 Requires improvement.
Ofsted stopped giving state schools a single overall grade in September 2024. Since November 2025 its report cards grade each area separately; 58 of these schools have had one.
