Hurworth School

When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 7), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1Looked after and previously looked after children — A looked after child is a child who is (a) in the care of a Local Authority or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (see the definition in section 22 (1) of the Children Act 1989):

5. 5Children of staff — A child is regarded as having been in state care outside of England if they were in the care of or were accommodated by a public authority, religious organisation, or any other provider of care whose sole or main purpose is to benefit society Children of a member of school staff Children of all staff employed at Hurworth School for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission is made and/or the member of staff has been recruited to fill a post at Hurworth School where there is a demonstrable skill shortage. Sibling Links Children who have a brother or sister already attending Hurworth School and who are expected to be on roll at the school at the time of admission (see definition). Children have a family link if:
6. 6Sibling link — They are half or full brother or sister
7. 7Sibling link — They are adoptive brother or sister
8. 8Sibling link — They are a foster brother or sister
9. 9Their carers are married/co-habiting and children live together in the same household
10. 10Exceptional medical or psychological grounds — They are children in the same household (e.g. carers have Special Guardianship/Child Arrangement order) Medical Reasons Children with exceptional medical factors directly relating to school placement. Applications under this criterion should be supported by written evidence from a professional practitioner. If you state a preference for Hurworth School and indicate your reason for doing so is ‘medical’, then you are required to send a supporting letter from a professional practitioner. The supporting evidence should set out the particular reasons why the school in question is the most suitable school and the difficulties it would cause if your child had to travel to another school. Permission from parents must be given to share this information. Children living in Hurworth Children who live within Hurworth Ward. Associated Areas Children who live within the following areas: The villages of Middleton St George, Middleton One Row, Neasham, Bishopton, Sadberge, Great Stainton, Little Stainton and the rural areas of Sockburn, Low Dinsdale and Hurworth Moor. If your rural area is not mentioned in the list, please refer to the maps found on the school admissions website or contact the school for further clarification. Distance Children who live nearest to Hurworth School; distances are calculated on the basis of the shortest walking route judged to be safe* from the front door of the child’s home address (including the community entrance to flats) to the main entrance of the school. However, for some applications it is recognised that the shortest route may not be a safe* route to walk in its entirety but may be a combination of both the shortest safest* walking route and a road route which will determine the basis of the measurement. Measurements for travel assistance will also be measured utilising the same measuring tool. This will be based on the child’s permanent home address. All distance measurements are based on the nearest route recognised by the Geographical Information System (GIS) from the child’s home address to the school. *(lighting at regular intervals and paved/tarmacked) Measurements For applications which require a measurement to be undertaken in order to apply the oversubscription criteria or to determine a tie-break situation, the Local Authority on behalf of the Academy will measure the distance using a Geographical Information System (GIS). This ensures consistency for all measurements.

Transcribed verbatim from the school's own published determined admission policy. A child with an Education, Health and Care Plan naming the school must be admitted; that is not an oversubscription criterion.

Published by the admission authority. Meeting a criterion never guarantees a place — it sets the order places are offered in. Full detail, other entry points and previous years are on the Admissions tab.
