When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Year 3), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.

1. 1Children looked after and previously looked after children — Children looked after — in public care under Section 22 of the Children Act 1989 — giving priority if necessary to the youngest children; children who were previously looked after, having ceased to be so because they were adopted or became subject to a Child Arrangements Order or Special Guardianship Order; and children previously looked after outside England. For a previously looked after child to be considered here, the parent or carer must provide appropriate written evidence with the application; without it the application cannot be considered under this criterion.
2. 2Catchment area, with a brother or sister at the school — Children living in the catchment area who have brothers or sisters in the school, or in the associated infant or junior school, at the time of admission. Brothers and sisters are those living at the same address, including step and foster children, and priority goes to those with the youngest siblings.
3. 3Outside the catchment area, with a sibling the council placed at the school — Children living outside the catchment area whose brother or sister was allocated a place at the school by the local authority either because no place was available at their catchment school due to oversubscription and this school was identified as the next nearest with a place, or because the school is named in the sibling's Education, Health and Care Plan. Brothers and sisters are those living at the same address, including step and foster children, and priority goes to those with the youngest siblings.
4. 4Other children living in the catchment area — Other children living in the catchment area, giving priority to those living closest to the school, measured in a straight line between the centre of the pupil’s home address and a common point on the school site determined by the local authority.
5. 5Outside the catchment area, with a brother or sister at the school — Children living outside the catchment area who have brothers or sisters in the school, or in the associated infant or junior school, at the time of admission. Brothers and sisters are those living at the same address, including step and foster children, and priority goes to those with the youngest siblings.
6. 6Other children living outside the catchment area — Children living outside the catchment area, giving priority to those living closest to the school, measured in a straight line between the centre of the pupil’s home address and a common point on the school site determined by the local authority.

Cumberland Council is the admission authority for community and voluntary controlled schools and sets these rules. It uses one list for entry to every year group except Year 12, so the same criteria apply to transferring into Year 3 as to starting Reception. Worth knowing, and unusual: the third priority is for children outside the catchment whose brother or sister was placed at this school by the council itself — either because their own catchment school was full, or because it is named in the sibling’s Education, Health and Care Plan — and that ranks above other children who live in the catchment. Attending an infant school does not guarantee admission to the associated junior school; a separate application is needed. A child holding an Education, Health and Care Plan naming the school is admitted as an exception to the criteria.
