Secondary School Application Deadline 2026: Your Last-Minute Checklist

If your child is in Year 6 now, you have a hard stop coming. In England it is 31 October 2026 for September 2027 entry. In Wales there is no single date — each council sets its own, and they are not close together: we checked 17 of the 22 Welsh authorities and found deadlines from 9 October (Rhondda Cynon Taf) to 31 October. This checklist walks through what to check before you click submit, the differences between England and Wales worth knowing, and how to use real admissions data — not guesswork — to judge your chances at your preferred schools.

The deadline isn't a suggestion. In England it is fixed at 31 October by the statutory admissions framework and local authorities apply it strictly. In Wales, Welsh Government regulations require every authority to run a co-ordinated scheme from the 2027/28 intake, but the published closing dates still differ by a day or two between councils — so the only date that matters is the one your council prints. Applications submitted after your council's deadline are classed as late applications and are typically considered only after all on-time applications have been processed, which can significantly reduce your chances at oversubscribed schools.

You apply through your home local authority — the council area where you live, not necessarily where the school is. Most councils now run this entirely online, and you'll be asked to rank a set number of school preferences. The number varies by council: several offer six, while Cardiff, for example, allows five. Check how many your council gives you before you plan your list.

If any of your preferred schools use their own supplementary information form (SIF) — common for faith schools or those with specific admissions criteria — that form usually has to be submitted separately, directly to the school, alongside your main council application. Missing a SIF is one of the most common reasons families lose out on a preference they were otherwise eligible for.

Both nations run their own School Admissions Code, and the detail differs — including, for this cycle, the closing date itself.

Most English and Welsh secondary schools don't have a fixed catchment boundary — admission is decided by distance when a school is oversubscribed, and the cut-off distance can shift from year to year depending on demand. That makes it hard to know, from a prospectus alone, whether your address is realistically in range.

Once your application is in, there's little to do until National Offer Day, which is 1 March 2027 for secondary places in both England and Wales. If you're not offered a preferred school, you can usually ask to be added to that school's waiting list and lodge an appeal — in England, waiting lists for the normal admissions round must stay open until at least 31 December 2027 under the current Admissions Code.
