When there are more applications than places for 2027-28 (Reception), places are offered in this order of priority. Meeting a higher criterion beats meeting a lower one.
If two applications tie: Where more than one sibling case must be separated, priority will be given to those children CLOSEST IN AGE to the sibling already attending the preferred school as of the admission date. Otherwise priority goes to children living closest to the preferred school, measured by the shortest recognised permitted walking route.
Where a school is named in a Local Authority Individual Development Plan the Council must admit the child BEFORE the oversubscription criteria are applied. A medical or social case must be supported by a MEDICAL CONSULTANT'S report specifying the medical advantage of the preferred school; reports from family doctors are NOT accepted. CATCHMENT CHANGES DETERMINED FOR THIS ROUND: following a consultation that ran from 12 December 2025 to 5 January 2026, Blaenau Gwent introduced a catchment area for Brynmawr Foundation School (taking in the catchment areas of Blaen y Cwm, Coed y Garn and Ystruth Primary Schools and amending Abertillery Learning Community's), and established a designated catchment area for Ysgol Gymraeg Tredegar while amending Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Helyg's. Any catchment boundary held for these schools from before 2026 is superseded.
